Recently, I came across a wonderful district just south of Seattle’s Downtown. Formerly an industrial district (it still kind of is), Georgetown is a great place to live, work and play.

The most notable buildings in Georgetown include The Lofts on Lucile, Pacific Market Center and the Seattle Design Center. In addition, on Airport Way South, there are various gift shops, restaurants and bars. There is even a tattoo shop and a Vespa dealership.

Georgetown also has a growing music scene – the renowned band Pearl Jam and local rapper the Y.F.C. have their studios in Georgetown. In addition, there are privately owned music recording studios and schools in the Georgetown area. Each year, they also have a music festival and street market in that same area.

With a diverse and eclectic mix of arts, design and affordability, Georgetown is a unique atmosphere for one to reside in. For more informaton about Georgetown in Seattle, Washington, please continue to check out LetMeVisit.com. Have a great day.

When traveling abroad, it is important to understand and be aware of the culture around onself. Here are 20 important cultural facts that you may or may not have known about India. Read them before travelling there.

1.	People greet each other and part using the phrase, “Namaste.”

2.	An important Indian holiday is Hindu New Year, which is celebrated at four different times, depending on region, and is observed with festivals, like Baisakhi. Another important holiday is Diwali. Diwali is a festival and is celebrated with firecrackers and lights, similar to Christmas in the USA.

3.	Gifts are appropriate when going to social gatherings and at various holidays like Hindu New Year. Appropriate gifts include flower and clothes. Liquor like whiskey is also appropriate.

4.	Social gatherings are usually family-oriented. However, it is usual for men and women to be separate at parties.

5.	Children are disciplined strictly at home and school. 50% of kids are subject to verbal discipline and 42% of kids are subject to extreme physical discipline like spanking.

6.	High school subjects include math, English, science, social science and second language. Days start with morning exercises, assemblies, moral classes, and subject classes. Usually there’s also special tutoring and athletics after school.

7.	Literacy rate in India is 59.5%.

8.	Indian water is contaminated with arsenic and fluoride. For personal hygiene, people in India use international brands. For garbage, they have recycling receptacles separated into three compartments to separate paper, plaster and other recyclable along with community bins for kitchen waste and other garbage.

9.	Normal dress in India would be tunic and trousers (churidar) for both men and woman. Women would also wear a long veil/scarf over their churidar. It is also typical for women to wear lots of silver/gold jewelry. However, India is beginning to westernize and many people within the cities dress like European/American people.

10.	Lunch and dinner in India is very similar. Curry is very important in Indian cuisine. Breakfast features numerous snacks. Tea and coffee is popular as beverages. Eating beef is taboo.

11.	Indian entertainment includes TV, radio, cricket, tennis, hockey, movies. Bollywood is located in India and has produced more movies that Hollywood.

12.	Indian people are not into alcohol but foreign liquor is acceptable. Gambling used to be taboo but now it is legitimate.

13.	Leisure activities include rafting in the Holy Granges, mountain climbing in the Himalayas, traveling to beaches, playing sports: cricket, tennis and hockey, and watching sports.

14.	Leisure activities for teens include playing/watching sports: cricket, tennis, hockey, watching movies, listening to music and etc – pretty much the same compared to US.

15.	India has a rather complex marriage system. Family arranges marriage. In Northern India, the bride marries and goes live with an unknown family. In Central India, a family usually marries their girls to the same lineage as others in their village have married their girls to. Bride also goes live with groom’s family. In Southern India, marriages are usually between cousins, children of brother and sister, and uncles with nieces. Doing so binds people in small tight knit groups. Remarriage is acceptable in lower castes, but not higher ones. Divorce is not recommended. The only five acceptable reasons for divorce by law are adultery, desertion, impotency, cruelty and chronic diseases. People who have divorced are usually looked down upon.

16.	The main languages spoken in India are English and Hindi. English is used in the business world and Hindi is used culturally.

17.	The main religion in India is Hindu, which represents 80.5% of the population. Currently, there are 11 religions practiced. There is no official religion.

18.	Traditional clothing in India include saris, ghagra-choli, salwar-kameez, dupatta, pyjama and kurta.

19.	Traditional Indian music (sangeet) focuses on vocals, instrumentals and dance and is popular amongst people in India. US pop/rock music is also popular, especially for younger generations. Currently, there are some English-speaking rock bands in India.

20.	One famous Indian is Mohandas Gandhi who fought for India’s independence from the British crown. Another famous person is Jawaharlal Nehru, who was the first prime minister of India. Subhas Chandra Bose was another famous folk hero in India. He also fought for independence but he was willing to use violence unlike Gandhi.

The kingdom of Shu was led by a ruler name Liu Bei. He was a man of virtue, and his desire was to restore the former Han dynasty back to its glory. Of the three leaders, Liu Bei was the most compassionate and daring. Along with his two forsworn brothers Guan Yu and Zeng Fei, he attempted but failed to reunite China.

His story begins with the story of the Yellow Turban Rebellion, when bandits tried to overrun the Han Dynasty. He and his brothers set out to protect the prince of Han. They succeeded in that battle but would ultimately fail to protect the prince. A dictator named Dong Zhuo would later manipulate his way to the top and forced the prince into abdication.

Liu Bei and his brothers set out to defeat Dong Zhuo, and they did so, but they failed to restore Han to its former glory. Rather, with the defeat of Dong Zhuo, China was ushered into the Three Kingdoms Era. Liu Bei, hopeless at the status quo, formed his own Kingdom to protect and restore Han. He would recruit talented warriors and generals to his side, but the most compelling of his forces was the strategist Kong Ming (to be cont.)

During that Era, China was split into three Kingdoms, known as the Wu, Wei, and Shu. Wu was ruled by Sun Jian and the Sun family, who wanted to restore peace and serenity under their family regime.

They believed that China should be one country and fought for the sake of their own future. After many battles, many victories and failtures, however, the Sun family ultimately failed to win the throne. Stay tuned for the story of Shu and Wei.

This is part one of our ongoing series which will explore with you Hong Kong from the eyes of a localized tourist, one with strong knowledge of Hong Kong but doesn’t live in the hustling bustling city.

I found this picture on Carpe Diem Review, a creative arts publication and I felt it is quite an interesting picture since it represents Tsim Sha Tsui, a popular tourist destination on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. We can see in the picture the Yue Hwa Department Store, known for its fine tradional goods imported from Mainland China.

We can see the constant public works improvements taking place in Hong Kong that reflects on the city’s care to infrastructure and its people. We can see many highrises, noting the high density nature of Hong Kong. And many of those buildings just look like towers of concrete.

But it is in these buildings that the daily lives of Hong Kong residents take place in, where people buy and sell goods or come home from a long day of work. It is these buildings that create the tourist nature of Tsim Sha Tsui and the rest of Hong Kong.

Hostels have traditionally been a source of lodging while traveling especially for young adventurers in their teens and twenties. You may ask, what is hosteling?

Hosteling is basically like a dormitory in college where you share rooms or bunks with other people. In this case, other travelers. These have been around for a very long time, at least dating back to the 1960s.

Another difference between a hostel and a hotel (not only the difference in pronounciation and one less letter), they have shared dining areas, bathrooms and kitchens. Yet, the newer hostels have accommodated the demands of the present generation of traveler and include private rooms for couples and families as well.

Wi-fi today is a popular amenity for travelers with laptops. Some hostels even provide chargers for iPhones and iPods. Today at hostels you may even see travelers in their 50s and 60s who have lived in them earlier in their lives while traveling and like to reminisce their past adventures.

Live musical entertainment… is that your passion? Do you enjoy beautiful outdoor settings?

If you are ever travelling to Seattle this summer, here is one event you should look for. In conjuction with KEXP, a local public radio station is offering free concerts at the Mural for three hours every Friday for four weeks. So if you like local independent music, then this is a place to check out. In addition, while you are at Seattle Center, there are other events that will be taking place. Last year, that venue hosted over 500 events.

On Labor Day weekend every year, there is a renowned music festival called Bumbershoot with mainstream and independent artists performing in Seattle Center. In 2008, attendance was at 68,000! So if you love to listen to jams, I would highly suggest checking out Seattle Center this summer, packed with musically related events to choose from.

And if you are ever bored, there are a variety of cool restaurants nearby that will satisfy any stomach. Have fun!

When traveling to Seattle, especially if are you planning to study there, you should definitely check out the University District, also known as U-District.

Centered on a street called University Way or many call it the Ave, the U-District is nearby the University of Washington’s Seattle campus where its award-winning medical, nursing, and computer science schools are located at, along with most of its other programs like the high-ranking Foster School of Business and the College of Engineering.

The Ave is full of high quality restaurants from all arenas of the world. You can have Chipotle burritos or basically any kind of Asian food. There is teriyaki, there is pho as well as Korean and Chinese food. Thus, overall, U-District is a great place to live and visit, as one can embrace the student lifestyle with freedom. Have a great day!

Bun Bo Hue: Originating from Hue, Central Vietnam (thus Bun Bo ‘Hue’), this Beefy Noodle Soup is well known for its spices and extravagant flavors in addition to the aroma and exquisiteness of the ingredients.

Bun Nam Vang: Bun Nam Vang originally came from the Kingdom of Cambodia and migrated to Southern Vietnam through trade and commerce routes, but it is now one of the most popular foods in the south. In addition, it is one of the most exquisite foods you’ll find. Sometimes, people eat it with lots of seafood, other times, you’ll find it full of meat.

If you are taking a trip to San Francisco, then there is a must-see destination. The The Walt Disney Family Museum. Now, you may ask, where is this museum? It is located in the Main Post in the Presidio of San Francisco.

Now, what is there? Of course there is Mickey Mouse, the legendary Disney trademark. You can also see different characters from classic to present Disney movies and television shows. In addition to the museum, there is an auditorium for viewing movie screenings and concerts. Now, what’s the disclaimer here. Looking at the flyer, they say clearly they are not affiliated with the publicly traded Walt Disney Company.

I believe this is a managed and operated by his family foundation exclusively, but it does provide a clearer and less-commercialized perspective of the classic Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters.

Anyway, if you are going down to San Fran and if you or your kids like Disney classics, then the Walt Disney Family Museum would be a great place to visit!

Tacoma is one of the largest cities in the State of Washington. As one of the main cultural hubs in the Pacific Northwest, the city offers a diverse selection of museums, theaters, restaurants, shops and unique neighborhoods. Located just eighteen miles south of the Seattle-Tacoma “Sea-Tac” International Airport and fronting Interstate-5, the major thoroughfare in the West Coast, the city is convenient by all means.

Picturesque views overlooking the beautiful sailboats passing by Commencement Bay is another attraction. Since its inception in 1864, Tacoma has had a flourishing economy. With its plethora of trees and its close proximity to the Puget Sound, the city was a logging and shipping community.

As it grew rapidly, the Northern Pacific Railroad chose Tacoma as its West Coast Terminus. Soon the city was given the nickname, “City of Destiny.” Today, the Port of Tacoma is one of the largest container terminals in North America as well as an important entity in international trade. Visitors and locals alike have continually praised the City of Tacoma for its impressive museums: Washington State History Museum, The Museum of Glass and the Tacoma Art Museum. Adjacent to each other, the three museums form a triangular site in the prominent Museum District.

When it comes to theatrical arts, Tacoma caters to every distinctive niche. The Theater District is anchored by The Broadway Center for Performing Arts with its Pantages Theater, Rialto Theater and Theater on the Square. The focal point of Tacoma is of course the Tacoma Dome, the world’s largest wood-domed arena. Standing prominently at fifteen stories tall and 530 feet in diameter, the Tacoma Dome hosts many professional sporting events, exhibitions, performance events as well as concerts for many mainstream artists.

Tacoma also offers other unique areas such us the Ruston Way Waterfront Promenade featuring a two-mile waterfront pathway fronted by the Restaurant Row boasting upscale as well as casual dining opportunities. For unique and eclectic tastes, Tacoma offers the upscale “Proctor District” consisting of various shops, restaurants and nightclubs. Every July, the community arranges the “Arts on the Ave” festival. Further, Proctor is just one of the many districts in Tacoma featuring specialty shopping and dining options.

Subsequently, Downtown Tacoma offers free light-rail transportation and certain park-and-ride facilities are also complimentary. Forthcoming is a light-rail linking Tacoma to Seattle and beyond. In addition to its museums, theaters and remarkable business districts, Tacoma is home to many parks and recreation facilities. Point Defiance Park, for example, is one of the largest urban parks in North America, with almost 700 acres of hiking trails, specialty gardens, picnic areas, saltwater beaches, a marina, a zoo and an aquarium. Tacoma offers a wealth of cultural and historical elements. The desirable climates, the striking views, the plentiful amount of things to do and places to see, make Tacoma a desirable place to call home.

This is part one of our series – Casinos and more in Macau.

Recently, I took a trip to Macau and visited numerous casinos and hotels. The most notable was at the Cotai Strip in the Taipa just south of the traditional Macau hotel and casino districts. The Venetian.

Staying there made me feel like I was in Las Vegas. It looked exactly the same as the Vegas property. But there were distinct features found in the Macau property and not at Vegas. Shuttle buses would drive tourists from the border of Macau and Zhuhai, China as well as from the ferry terminals.

It becomes less of a hotel/resort and more of just a gambling destination. Recent news has shown that the casino operations in Macau are more profitable than its counterpart in Vegas because Chinese and other Asian people who are into gaming, they usually play in larger amounts than their American counterparts. Therefore, it appears that casinos in Macau are profitable businesses.

Meanwhile, across the street from the Venetian is the newly opened City of Dreams, in which we will talk about next time. Anyway, good luck and have fun if you go to Macau!
